There are also two books by John Emms that should be particularly useful for White players: Attacking with 1.e4 and Starting Out: King's Indian Attack. I like trying out the Bayonet Attack in the King's Indian Defense. E5 against French and Caro-Kann equally (with no King's Indian Attack system). I don't think it did much good. As always, let us know what you think. If Black exchanges on e4 or g4 then his attacking potential is minimized; his defensive ability is also threatened by g5, and, later, Bg4. He covers openings ranging from the King's Indian Attack to the Tarrasch as well as a number of key middlegame and endgame ideas. Made some researche and found out, that I should start studying games of Karpov, Nimcovič, Petrosjan, Capablanca and Kramnik. When I was a child prodigy, my chess tutor recommended me take up the King's Indian Attack and Defense. But for the great majority of experienced tournament players, I think that memorizing . Are, I think, a good vehicle for learning-by-example. Occasionally I run into a player (usually unrated or just starting out in tournament chess) who really should learn some opening theory, because they are falling into known traps over and over. More specifically, the 5-minute pool where there are plenty of GMs to serve as sounding boards. The idea behind g5 and Bg4 is to block in the g7 bishop and exchange off the g4 one.
