The City and the Pillar Gore Vidal

He wrote his first novel at 19 while serving in the Army during World War II. Gore Vidal: (October 3, 1925- present). The author, essayist, playwright, screenwriter and gay icon was 86 years old, whose most well-known novels were Myra Breckinridge, Two Sisters and Lincoln. Perhaps the hysterical reaction to The City and the Pillar was what started a long process of alienation from the Establishment into which Vidal had been born. Vidal is the author of multiple novels, including Burr (the first in his Narratives of Empire series), The City and the Pillar, and Myra Breckinridge. The City knew it was time to upgrade an old, dilapidated, unsafe above ground park but funds were limited and resources were tight. During those days, most of what I learned about homosexuality I found in literature, such as Gore Vidal's book, “The City and the Pillar,” which ironically was published about the same time I was born. I wanted to do a professional job and ask good, thoughtful, intelligent questions. In 1948, his novel The City and the Pillar, with its overtly homoerotic theme, was pilloried by The New York Times. The conference and the banquet rooms at The Palace, Bangalore are par excellence and feature the finest in audio visual equipment and facilities. The New York Times refused to review his next five books. Like any self-respecting American who considers himself even the slightest but literarily inclined, I was already a fan of Vidal's work. The City and the Pillar was the first gay novel that I read, unaware that it had practically killed his career in the 1950s, forcing him to work under pseudonyms. To make a living, Vidal started writing for television, theater and film.
